How to use the hours calculator
- Enter a start and an end time. Type or pick the clock-in and clock-out times for a shift. If the end time is earlier than the start, the shift is automatically treated as running overnight into the next day.
- Subtract breaks and add more rows. Enter unpaid break time in minutes for each row, and press + Add row to build a full weekly timesheet with one row per day or shift.

About this tool
This free hours calculator (also called a time card or timesheet calculator) works out the elapsed time between two clock times — perfect for filling in timesheets, checking payroll, billing clients by the hour, planning study sessions or tracking overtime. It shows results both as hours and minutes (7h 30m) and as decimal hours (7.50), the format most payroll systems expect, and it can total any number of shifts with unpaid breaks deducted.

Frequently asked questions
How are overnight shifts handled?
If the end time is earlier than the start time — say 22:00 to 06:00 — the calculator assumes the shift crosses midnight and adds 24 hours, giving 8 hours. Rows counted this way are flagged as overnight below the table.
What are decimal hours and why do timesheets use them?
Decimal hours express minutes as a fraction of an hour: 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.50 hours, and 15 minutes is 0.25 hours. Payroll and invoicing software multiplies decimal hours by the hourly rate directly, which is why timesheets usually ask for that format.
How do I deduct a lunch break?
Enter the unpaid break length in minutes in the “Break” column of the row — for example 30 for a half-hour lunch. The break is subtracted from that row's duration before it is added to the totals.
Is my timesheet data uploaded anywhere?
No. All calculations run in your browser using plain JavaScript. Your times, breaks and hourly rate are never sent to a server, stored or logged.
