How to make an image background transparent

Frequently asked questions
Why should I download as PNG instead of JPG?
JPG has no alpha channel, so it cannot store transparency — a transparent area saved as JPG becomes a solid color. PNG (and WebP) keep true transparency, which is why this tool exports only those formats.
What does the tolerance slider do?
Tolerance sets how far a pixel's color may differ from the clicked color and still be removed, measured as the RGB distance between the two colors. At 0% only the exact same color is erased; higher values also catch nearby shades — useful for backgrounds with slight gradients, shadows or JPG compression noise.
What is the difference between the two removal modes?
"All matching pixels" erases every pixel in the whole image that matches the picked color. "Connected area only" behaves like a magic wand: it removes only the continuous region touching the point you clicked, so identical colors elsewhere in the picture — for example white areas inside your subject — are preserved.
Can this remove a complex photo background?
The tool is color-based, so it works best on solid or nearly solid backgrounds like white product shots, colored logo backgrounds or scanned sketches. Busy backgrounds with many colors (trees, rooms, crowds) need subject-detection software rather than color matching. For a slightly uneven background, try a higher tolerance with soft edges, removing it in several clicks with Keep & pick another.
