Frequently asked questions

Why is the rotated image larger than the original?

Rotating by an angle that is not a multiple of 90° enlarges the bounding box so all four corners of your picture still fit. The extra corner space is transparent in PNG and WebP output, or filled with your chosen corner color in JPG.

Does rotating reduce image quality?

90°, 180° and 270° turns simply remap pixels, so downloading as PNG keeps them essentially lossless. Custom angles require interpolation between pixels, which can soften fine detail slightly — that is true of any image editor.

Which direction do positive angles turn?

Positive angles rotate clockwise and negative angles rotate counter-clockwise, matching the ⟳ right and ⟲ left buttons. For example, −3° tilts the image slightly to the left.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The whole rotation runs in your browser and the image never leaves your device — the tool even keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
