About this tool
This free video to GIF converter turns short video clips into animated GIFs you can post anywhere — chat apps, forums, documentation, bug reports or social media. Because GIFs autoplay silently in almost every context, they are perfect for reaction clips, short demos of an app, or looping highlights. You control the trade-off between smoothness and file size with the frame rate, width and color quality settings.
The conversion happens completely in your browser: frames are captured from the video with the HTML5 canvas and encoded into a GIF by a local script, so your video is never uploaded to any server. That keeps private recordings private and means there are no size caps, queues, watermarks or sign-ups.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my GIF file so large?
GIF is an old format that stores every frame as a full image with up to 256 colors, so it is far less efficient than modern video. To shrink the file, reduce the width (320–480 px is plenty for chats), lower the frame rate to 8–10 fps, choose the smaller-file color quality, or convert a shorter time range.
What is the maximum GIF length?
The tool caps a single GIF at 300 frames. That is 30 seconds at 10 fps or 15 seconds at 20 fps. Longer ranges would create enormous files and can exhaust browser memory, so for longer content it is better to keep the clip as a video.
Will the GIF loop, and does it keep the sound?
The GIF is written to loop forever, which is how players and chat apps display it. GIFs cannot contain audio, so the sound track of your video is simply not included.
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. The video is opened locally, frames are drawn to a canvas on your device and the GIF is encoded by a script running in your browser. Nothing leaves your computer, so screen recordings and personal videos stay private.
